Scripture: John 4:43–54

Scripture References
- Ephesians 3:19 - The central verse: to know this love that surpasses knowledge so believers may be filled with the fullness of God; basis for the sermon.
- Ephesians 3:16 - Paul prays believers be strengthened with power (Greek: dunamis) through the Spirit in their inner being.
- Ephesians 3:1; 4:1; 6:20 - Paul writing from prison and describing his role as a prisoner/ambassador for Christ; sets context for earnest prayer.
- Ephesians 3:17-18 - Paul prays Christ may dwell in believers’ hearts and that they grasp the width, length, height, and depth of Christ’s love.
- 1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19 - The church and individual bodies as the temple of God and dwelling place of the Spirit.

Central Message
Paul's prayer: that the church and each believer would know and experience Christ—receiving gnoso (knowledge through seeing/hearing/experiencing), be strengthened with dunamis (power) by the Holy Spirit, and grow in faith rooted in the inexhaustible love of God.

Key Points
1. Context: Paul writes from prison yet prays fervently for the church to know Jesus Christ by any means.
2. Knowledge (Greek gnoso) is not merely intellectual; it is knowledge through seeing, hearing, reading, investigating, and experiencing Christ in life.
3. Power (Greek dunamis) — the church is called to be powerful, not weak; that power comes from the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.
4. Christ’s indwelling is permanent (not temporary): when we accept Jesus we become His Spirit’s permanent dwelling.
5. Growth in faith happens two ways: by knowing Christ experientially and by knowing the magnitude of God’s love; both increase faith over time.
6. Spiritual maintenance: believers must avoid running “out of gas” — stay connected to the Spirit so the church remains effective.
7. Spiritual maturity takes time; we are being formed into vessels through which God pours out His fullness.

Notable Quotes
"And to know this love that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to the measure of the fullness of God." (Ephesians 3:19)
"Knowledge obtained through seeing, hearing, reading, investigating, and experiencing." — on gnoso
"Too often, Christians neglect their spiritual maintenance... clothed with power, find themselves out of gas." — Stephen Blankenship via Max Lucado
Denzel Washington story: "Go wash the windows for me... you were a knucklehead." (a humbling reminder that God loved us long before our successes)

Application
- Pursue experiential knowledge of Jesus: read Scripture, listen, pray, investigate, and intentionally seek to experience Christ in daily life.
- Cultivate dependence on the Holy Spirit so you are continually strengthened with power for ministry and trials.
- Prioritize spiritual maintenance (regular prayer, worship, service) to avoid becoming “out of gas.”
- Be patient in spiritual growth; allow God time to form the image of Christ in you.
- Live as vessels that allow God to pour out His fullness—serve and love others as signs of Christ dwelling in you.

Prayer Points
- Pray for knowledge (gnoso) of Christ that leads to real experience, not just information.
- Pray to be strengthened with dunamis — power from the Holy Spirit in your inner being.
- Pray that Christ may dwell permanently in your heart through faith and that you be rooted and established in love.
- Pray for spiritual perseverance so the church never becomes weak in doing Christ’s work.
- Pray daily for both the church and individual lives to experience God’s presence, love, and power.

Reflection Questions
1. Have I experienced Christ personally, or do I mostly know Him from books and sermons?
2. In what areas of my life do I need the Holy Spirit’s dunamis power right now?
3. Where am I neglecting spiritual maintenance and at risk of running “out of gas”?
4. How does knowing the width, length, height, and depth of Christ’s love change my trust and obedience?
5. What steps will I take this week to grow in experiential knowledge of Jesus?
