Submitting Ourselves to God

Scripture: James 4:1–10

Summary of Submit, Resist, Draw Near

Scripture References
- James 4:1–8 — central text: diagnosis (self-centered desires), rebuke ("You adulterous people"), and commands: submit, resist, draw near.
- Genesis 3:5 — used to illustrate the original temptation to be "like God" (self-rule leads to sin).
- John (nobleman) — John 4 — referenced earlier as an example of steps toward faith.
- Matthew 4 — Jesus resisted temptation by quoting Scripture (model for resisting the devil).
- Matthew 13:38–39 — the weeds = work of the enemy/devil.
- 1 Peter 5:8 — warning: the devil prowls looking to devour.
- Ephesians 6:11 — exhortation to put on the full armor of God to stand against the devil's schemes.

Central Message
We must submit ourselves to God, resist the devil, and draw near to God daily so we do not drift into self‑serving desires and the wrong direction away from Jesus.

Key Points
1. Diagnosis: many conflicts and sins come from our own desires and wanting to serve ourselves rather than God (illustrated by Dr. Peck's counseling story).
2. James' commands: Submit to God, Resist the devil, Draw near to God (James 4:7–8) — these are practical, urgent, and repeated.
3. Spiritual tools: use Scripture (Jesus' example), self-control, alertness, and the full armor of God to oppose the enemy.
4. Danger of small compromises: the "nail" story shows how leaving a small foothold for the devil lets him return and make life unlivable — remove every small compromise.
5. Persistence: drawing near to God is not occasional but daily and continual, drawing from Christ's presence and power for everyday needs.

Notable Quotes
"You adulterous people...friendship with the world is hatred toward God."
"Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you."
From the counseling story: "I don't want to live for God... I want to live for me."

Application
- Submit daily: yield your will and fix your heart on God rather than on self‑rule.
- Resist actively: oppose temptation and the devil’s schemes now (not passively), using Scripture and spiritual vigilance.
- Remove small footholds: identify and eliminate the "small nails" (compromises, habits, secret sins) that allow the enemy to return.
- Draw near every day: cultivate daily prayer, Scripture, and reliance on Christ’s presence and power for everyday decisions and struggles.
- Put on God’s armor: practice spiritual disciplines (truth, righteousness, faith, prayer) to stand against attacks.

Prayer Points
- Thanking God for His presence and asking that He walk and talk personally with us now and forevermore.
- Pray for the grace to submit, resist, and draw near daily.
- Protection from the enemy and strength to remove every small compromise.

Reflection Questions
1. Am I living to serve myself or to glorify and serve God? Where is that most obvious in my life?
2. What small compromises or "nails" have I left that allow the enemy a foothold?
3. How will I intentionally draw near to God every day this week (prayer times, Scripture passages, accountability)?
4. When temptation comes, do I have specific Scriptures or practices I will use to resist as Jesus did?
